The Wild Hunt

CANNOT WAIT FOR APRIL 13!!!

The Tallest Man on Earth's new album drops very very soon, and I cannot wait! I am going to Montreal to see him play, on April 16, and I feel like my life will be complete once that happens.

Here's a peek of what the album has to offer; two tracks from The Wild Hunt.

Not like this

To you, it isn’t walking

And to know the street,

Now i know why

Horses and carriages interrupt

Sailing ships –

That's the memory i’ve seen

I’ve never thought it was from old books.

I’m sure it wasn’t.

We told the field that day,

“stop the dreams.”

Do that doo-wop rockin' dance

Over the past couple months, I have become more and more obsessed with that up-beat, doo-woppy music from the 50's. Here is what I can suggest as a few of my favourites:

Bobby Darin - Dream Lover

The Chiffons - One Fine Day

Thurston Harris - Little Bitty Pretty One

The Everly Brothers - Devoted to You

The Fleetwoods - Come to me Softly (youtube)

Weekend

So I am sitting in a closet right now, perched on a step ladder, watching on-comers walker in and out of those glass doors. The band tonight is totally balls, in my opinion. Not to say the musicians can't play their instruments, or the melodies don't blend together well - but I just kind of hate "metal" sellouts who spend too much time gelling their hair, and buying pre-ripped jeans , trying to convince themselves they are real, bad-ass rockers. Not to mention their make-uppy girlfriends. AND, who's the dude with the leather-spike choker? Someone's gotta tell that guy that Evanescence is no longer cool...

The good thing about this 5' by 5' box is I've made it feel like a total hideout. The coats that hang above and below me are covering just enough of the over-head light to make me feel like I've ran away. When I kneel down to get something on the floor, and look up at the small over-sized window out at the bar, I feel like a little kid hiding out. If only no one could actually see me!

Sitting here, writing this with a black, dull sharpie, while other occupants in the building drink alcoholic beverages, makes me feel even more like a seven year old, waiting for her dad to finish socializing so he can take me home. It is almost 10pm...way past my weekday bedtime!

Oh boy! I'm getting tired, speaking of bedtime. And I just realized that I really have to pee. WHERE IS JAMES!!

Oh, yes, here is Matty to releave me from my agony!

Written on a slow Saturday night in coat check.

Dirty, gritty, scary

My little sister asked me to help her find a famous photographer that she could do a project on for her Media class. I don't know very many photographers, and was having trouble thinking of one off the top of my head. But then I recalled reading a post on the Selvedge Yard about William Gedney. We looked through a lot of his photos, and the first thing she said about his work was that alot of the images were scary looking. That's precisely the feeling that Gedney attempted to portray in his work. He produced images that were haunting with truth surrounding the lives of the poor, rebellious and overworked across America from the 1960s until the 1980s. Below are a few of my favourite images I have seen from his collections:

Man with cigarette on motorcycle, San Francisco --taken '66 or '67.

Europe

Boy covered by dirt smoking cigarette with one hand, holding can of tobacco in other. Kentucky, 1964.

Man driving car and drinking can of beer. Kentucky, 1972.

Take a look at more of his photographs here.

SO LONG!!!

So, yup, it's been eternity since I have blogged. I guess any moment I can spend away from my computer, I will take - the beautiful weather has enticed me to spend every second outside that I am not writing essays!!

The one thing I am most, most excited about that's approaching next week, is the Machotaildrop premiere at the Mayfair on March 31! Presented by Top of the World, the film starts at 9pm! Come early and get your tickets and seats, and enjoy the movie with all the hyped up kids waiting to see what this Willa Wonka of the skate world has to share! Drop by Top to enter your name in a draw to win free passes for the night, also. It should be a good time!

Also, while you're out and about in the next week, go and check out the Two Days Slow: An Alice in Wonderland Group art show at Canteen on Dalhousie. The exhibit is up until March 28. This is a perfect time for this theme of art show, considering the newly released Tim Burton flick (which I've yet to see!!)
EXCITING NEWS! I don't want to jinx it, but I applied for a 3 bedroom in the Elgin Court, above from Oz cafe this past Friday! HOPEFULLY WE GET IT! I'll keep you posted on that !!

Cut it out

.
Today was an awesome Thursday. Another beautiful day, and I luckily had the whole afternoon to do whatever I wanted! I woke up at a decent time without the help of an alarm clock, and spent the morning eating leftover Chinese food, cleaning the house, and hanging out with my roommate. Then I met up with my friend and roamed around centertown taking photos of things and people.

This is the busted up cassette tape that I found in a parking lot and pocketed. I like it, but it smells like garbage.

We then came back to my house and made paper airplanes for about half an hour trying to find my favourite style of plane.

I decided I liked the classic "arrow plane" the best!

Photos from our film camera-adventure will be posted later later.

I also made friends with a gentleman with a dark room...

Mad Hatting

Out this Friday, March 5, this version of Alice in Wonderland looks mystical and terrifyingly Tim Burton. I am going to refresh my memory by reading the book version tonight.

bleached-out lace eyes

I have been craving new and exciting. I have a xylophone that my very favourite friend is letting me play with. I like it; I spent Sunday night drinking cider in an attic fort-room playing the chord-organ and looking at books about history.

The warmer weather makes me want to run around a lot - I kind of love the feeling of slightly sinking into the half-thawed, muddy ground.

In my pursuit for creativity, I present you with a list of music for your teeth to bite into. Try it, I'm sure you will like it.

Sore Eros - Yellow Dress
Fairly new to my music collection, Sore Eros is a band that cleverly combines artistic sound with the depth of talented music beauty (if that makes sense - it does in my mind).

This video is super cool. I find it very mesmerizing in a kind of nostalgic way. I want to make a fort out of it.

Leonard Cohen - You Know Who I Am
We read Cohen in my Canadian Literature class today, and it reminded me of how great an artist this man is. His poetry resonates with my own poetic views, and his words strike me so strongly to create something just as beautiful.

This is one of my favourite of his work:

A Kite is a Victim
A kite is a victim you are sure of.
You love it because it pulls
gentle enough to call you master,
      strong enough to call you fool;
      because it lives
      like a desperate trained falcon
      in the high sweet air,
and you can always haul it down
to tame it in your drawer.
A kite is a fish you have already caught
in a pool where no fish come,
so you play him carefully and long,
and hope he won't give up,
      or the wind die down.
A kite is the last poem you've written,
so you give it to the wind,
but you don't let it go
      until someone finds you
      something else to do.
A kite is a contract of glory
that must be made with the sun,
so you make friends with the field
      the river and the wind,
then you pray the whole cold night before,
      under a travelling cordless moon,
to make you worthy and lyric and pure.

My Morning Jacket - New Morning (Nick Cave cover)
I can thank a friend who had absolutely every My Morning Jacket album and loaded my ipod with their beautiful melodies and Jim James' captivating, and deeply inspiring voice. Check out his solo stuff - Yim Yames if you've over-listened to My Morning Jacket by now (if there is even such a thing)

Tom Waits - I want you

Tom Waits - I wish I was in New Orleans

If his voice hasn't stirred a creative chord in your bones, scroll down.

Point proven. What a babe.

Neutral Milk Hotel - Ghost

I wish I was born in a bottle rocket. Neutral Milk Hotel's lyrics send me to a different place and time all together. A location that I feel only exists in a dream or on a whole other wave-length of being.

The Velvet Underground - Heroin

I remember first hearing The Velvet Underground's self-titled album when I was 16, and knowing there was something alluring and majestic about their work, but not quite understanding it fully at that point. They have grown to be one of my favourites, and I would rank them up there with musical greats like The Rolling Stones, Joy Division, and Janis Joplin. Also, the thought of being part of the Factory scene in the 60s entices me.

Tied Up

SO here's what is happening this weekend - this should tie you over 'til I get back in the bloggernation.

First and foremost, Yacht is playing at Ritual this Friday, March 5!! Tickets are still available at Top of the World and a few other retailers I'm sure! This should be a ball - I am super excited.

I really love the video for Psychic City, and even though this song is kind of old to the blogging world, it still rules.

Yukon Blonde at Zaphods on Saturday, March 6 - show starts at 8pm. I just started listening to this band, but they sound pretty good so far. They sound pretty 60s/70s inspired, and they've just released their self-titled debut in early February. They are playing with The Property Line, from right Ottawa. I am digging this band - you can get their EP off their website.

Apology accepted?

I apologize for my lack of posting in the past week. Things have been kind of hectic, and I have been unmotivated to blog. Let's Call it a Day will be moving users shortly, from Blogger to Tumblr, so give me a bit, and I'll have more posts happening for sure. I have let the blogging world down in the past week, but I promise to get back on top in no time.

With all of this said, I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather we have been having, and waking up with your windows open. I know I have. My leather jacket is surely getting some love this week.

I hope to become more inspired than I have been feeling in the past little bit. Are you inspired?

Sincerely,
Day Caller
